Five Obstacles to Substance Abuse Treatment

Shame usually tops the list of the five reasons that individuals typically avoid treatment for alcohol and substance abuse.

young man with serious expressionShame is often at the top of the list of reasons people don’t seek help for an addiction problem.  Perhaps it’s shame that they are addicted or shame that they can’t seem to quit on their own.  Some may see it as a character flaw, or that something about them just isn’t right, or they aren’t like everyone else.

Another reason people sometimes don’t go into treatment is that they have feelings of guilt over things they may have done while addicted, as well as guilt over the people they may have hurt.  Some people might feel that they don’t deserve another chance or that they can’t ask the people whom they love to help them to get into drug or alcohol treatment.

Regret is the third factor that sometimes stops people from seeking treatment.  Perhaps they have disappointed family members repeatedly or have destroyed personal relationships.  Some people have lost jobs or careers and feel they can never get back to where they were before addiction took over their life.

Sometimes people think that if they give up their addiction, they will never be able to have fun again or socialize with family and friends.  They can’t understand why others can drink or use drugs recreationally and not destroy their lives.

Number four is fear. People sometimes fear addiction treatment believing that they will be treated badly, while some may have gone to treatment programs in the past and felt they were not treated with respect.  Perhaps some people have attended programs where promises made were vastly different from reality.

Shame, guilt, regret,  and fear come together to create the fifth and perhaps biggest obstacle of all for getting into a treatment program – hopelessness.

Many people who have been fighting addiction for years, or some who have achieved recovery only to relapse again and again, along with those who have unsuccessfully tried treatment programs in the past, have given up.  They have lost hope that they can ever overcome their addiction.
