Holistic rehabilitation is effective at helping with instances of chronic relapse.
Holistic rehabilitation investigates the underlying sources of addictive behavior and seeks to respond to addiction in ways that are successful for the long term. This makes holistic rehabilitation particularly effective at helping with instances of repeated or chronic relapse.
Recovery from addiction is sometimes a process of short-term sobriety, followed by relapse, which happens again and again. Both the person with the addiction and those that love them, often feel like recovery that lasts is impossible.
Why is long-term recovery so hard to achieve?
For a long time, 12-step programs were the only accepted type of treatment for anyone with addiction. The assumption was that addiction was treated by following specific steps and that someone who faithfully followed those steps, could become sober and maintain sobriety. No consideration was given to the underlying causes of a person’s addiction. It was basically a one-size fits all methodology for substance abuse treatment. It worked for some people, but there were many that found it unsuccessful – and the overall reason given for their failure was that they didn’t work the program correctly; if they had, it would have worked.
Fortunately, a different type of treatment is available that seeks to remove the blame and shame of chronic relapse. A treatment that looks at the complete person and what lead to their addictive behaviors. Holistic rehabilitation considers many factors, such as the substance of choice, how long the person has been using substances, medical conditions, what effect the substance use has had on the individual’s physical and mental well-being, legal issues, how the use has impacted their family, their employment and their social life.

A one size fits all approach doesn’t work for addiction treatment. Individualized care that is planned for the needs of the individual leads to a better overall outcome and a reduced risk of relapse. Holistic treatment addresses medical concerns, mental health, physical stamina, nutrition and exercise. Individual therapy with a mental health professional, group sessions that address issues such as avoiding relapse and understanding how addiction develops, meditation to begin to experience how a quiet, peaceful mind feels, and art, music and recreation therapy to reconnect with creativity are all important components of treating addiction. Neurofeedback is incorporated because of data showing that it helps prevent relapse, as well as improving sleep, anxiety and other issues.
A holistic treatment program is more than meetings and following steps. It is learning a new and healthy way to live.
