Treatment Options for Drug Abuse: A Complete Guide to Substance Use Disorder Care

When someone is struggling with substance abuse, trying to stop on their own can be difficult and, in some cases, unsafe. The right support can help protect their health and provide a clearer path forward.

Treatment options for drug abuse may include detox, residential treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, standard outpatient care, virtual services, and continuing support. Each level offers a different amount of structure, and care can change as a person's needs change.

This article explains how common forms of substance abuse treatment differ and how they may fit together over time. You don’t have to choose a program alone. Gulf Breeze Recovery's admissions team can explain how its levels of care differ and answer questions about available treatment options.

What is substance use disorder treatment?

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a term used when alcohol or drug use becomes difficult to control and begins to affect everyday life. The experience can look different from one person to another and may influence physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, responsibilities, and daily routines.

Treatment can take different forms depending on what a person needs. SAMHSA notes that care may include therapy, medication when appropriate, residential or outpatient treatment, telehealth, and ongoing recovery support. The right combination of services can change over time as a person’s needs and circumstances change.1

Is substance use disorder treatable?

Substance use disorder is treatable, but stopping alcohol or drugs can be challenging. Depending on the substance, how it has been used, and a person’s overall health, stopping suddenly can sometimes cause withdrawal symptoms that need medical support. If you are unsure what kind of help may be appropriate, the admissions team can talk through the available options with you.

Inpatient vs. outpatient rehab: How do these levels of care differ?

The main difference between inpatient or residential care and outpatient care is where a person lives during treatment and the level of structure the program provides. Residential clients live at the treatment setting. Outpatient clients return home or to another supportive living environment after scheduled services.

Factor Inpatient or residential Outpatient
Setting The client lives in a structured treatment environment. The client attends scheduled care and returns home or to supportive housing.
Structure Day-to-day support and separation from common triggers are built into the setting. Services are scheduled around a greater level of independence.
General focus Higher structure, on-site support, and more separation from everyday pressures. Scheduled treatment with more independence between sessions.
Examples Residential treatment and, when medically required, hospital-based inpatient care. PHP, IOP, standard outpatient care, and some telehealth services.

The amount of support someone needs can change over time, and the admissions team can explain the differences between partial hospitalization program (PHP) vs. intensive outpatient program (IOP) levels of care.

Detox programs

A detox program helps support the body as alcohol or drugs leave the system. During detox, the care team can monitor how someone is feeling, support comfort and safety, and use medication when appropriate. The level of monitoring depends on the substance, pattern of use, health history, and the person's expected withdrawal risks.

Detox is often the first stage of care, but it’s not the same as a complete treatment plan. Once a person is medically stable, continued treatment may address cravings, coping patterns, co-occurring mental health concerns, relationships, and plans for returning to daily life.

Residential treatment programs

A residential treatment program provides a structured place to live while participating in treatment. Days may include individual and group therapy, recovery planning, wellness activities, additional health support when needed, and time to rest and reflect.

Residential treatment offers more structure and day-to-day support than outpatient care. It can give clients space away from everyday pressures while they focus on recovery. The length of residential care can vary based on each person's needs, progress, and individualized treatment plan.

Some clients benefit from an extended residential option when more time would support stability and skill-building. People preparing for admission can also review the list of what to pack for rehab.

Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)

At Gulf Breeze Recovery, our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is provided in-house. Clients remain on-site rather than returning home after programming, so they continue to have a structured and supportive environment. PHP provides a high level of structure while care continues to be individualized around each client's needs and progress.

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)

An intensive outpatient program provides structured therapy and recovery support with fewer scheduled hours than PHP. It allows clients to continue treatment while maintaining more of their day-to-day responsibilities, such as work, school, or family commitments.

Gulf Breeze Recovery’s current IOP structure is primarily evening-based and typically includes two sessions per week, each about three hours, with an overall duration of approximately three months. Schedules and length of care may vary depending on each client’s needs, progress, and program availability.

Clients who need less structure may transition to general outpatient rehab, where visit frequency is individualized. Gulf Breeze Recovery also provides YMCA memberships for IOP and outpatient clients to support physical wellness and healthy routines. Because services vary by level of care, some holistic and experiential therapies available in residential treatment are not offered through IOP or outpatient programming.

Telehealth addiction treatment

Telehealth addiction treatment uses secure video services to provide care remotely when appropriate. Telehealth can make it easier to continue treatment when distance, travel, or scheduling make in-person care difficult.

However, virtual treatment isn’t appropriate for every situation. Withdrawal risk, medical stability, privacy, access to technology, location, licensing requirements, and the safety of the home environment can all affect whether telehealth is a suitable option.

Medication use within treatment

While medication may still be used when it can safely support a client's care, treatment at Gulf Breeze Recovery is not centered wholly on medication use.

Our programs emphasize a holistic, non-12-step approach that looks at the emotional, behavioral, physical, and lifestyle factors connected to substance use. Therapy, mindfulness, wellness practices, and individualized recovery planning can all be part of that process.

If you have questions about how medication is used within care, the admissions team can explain Gulf Breeze Recovery's approach and help you understand what the program does and doesn’t provide.

Aftercare and relapse prevention

Aftercare and relapse prevention support can help clients carry treatment skills into everyday life. Support may include ongoing counseling, recovery planning, identifying triggers, strengthening routines, connecting with supportive people, and deciding what to do when warning signs appear.

At Gulf Breeze Recovery, aftercare currently functions as a step-down option after outpatient care rather than a fixed, standalone program. Continuing support can be shaped around each client’s progress, everyday environment, and the support they have around them.

Does relapsing mean you can’t be treated?

A return to substance use can happen during recovery, but it doesn’t mean that treatment has failed or that previous progress has been lost. It may be a sign that additional support or a change in the treatment plan is needed.

The right next step depends on the person’s current substance use, health, safety, environment, and recovery needs. Some people may need a higher level of care, while others may benefit from reconnecting with counseling or other recovery support. If substance use returns, reaching out for help can provide an opportunity to reassess what is working and what may need to change.

A holistic, non-12-step approach to treatment

Gulf Breeze Recovery uses a holistic, non-12-step approach across its continuum of care. “Holistic” means the treatment plan looks beyond substance use alone and considers physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, routines, stress, and the person’s environment.

Depending on the level of care and the client’s needs, treatment may include evidence-based therapies, mindfulness, meditation, trauma-focused support, family involvement, and wellness practices. Services are individualized, and not every therapy is available in every program. The goal is to help each client understand the patterns associated with substance use and practice healthier ways of responding to daily life.

Substance use disorder treatment FAQs

Inpatient or residential treatment provides overnight care in a structured setting. Outpatient treatment allows a client to attend scheduled services and return home or to supportive housing. A professional assessment can help determine which setting and intensity fit the person’s current needs.

Gulf Breeze Recovery's PHP is in-house, and clients remain on-site rather than returning home after programming. IOP is less intensive and is primarily evening-based, with clients returning home after sessions. The amount of structure and scheduling differs, and the team can explain how each program works.

You do not have to sort through the levels of care on your own. Gulf Breeze Recovery's admissions team can explain how detox, residential treatment, PHP, IOP, and outpatient services are structured and answer questions about what to expect. Treatment planning can then be individualized as care moves forward.
