Taking an innovative look at addiction and recovery.
“Beyond Addiction” is a podcast dedicated to exploring the vast implications that understanding the nature of the human experience have on addiction and recovery.
Our primary focus is sharing an "inside out" approach to recovery.
An "outside in" misunderstanding of the way we experience life creates the "fertile soil" for addiction to flourish. This misunderstanding happens when we attribute our feelings and our experience of life to people, places, things and situations outside of ourselves. What we mean by having an "inside out" understanding is understanding that we are actually experiencing all of life from the inside out, via the filter of our own thinking.
The implications that this understanding have on addiction are profound. Attributing feelings of joy, happiness, completion, serenity, etc. to anything outside of ourselves innocently creates fertile ground for addiction. A person will return to a substance, person, activity or object over and over and over again searching for that good or "happy" feeling. It will always be a fruitless search because joy, happiness, completion, serenity, etc. are only available from the inside out.
While traditional programs focus on a "prescription" of things a person must do in order to get through a day without drinking or using, we focus on getting to the underlying, root cause that led to substance abuse in the first place.
Addressing the underlying cause of addiction in one's thinking and gaining an embodied understanding of the inside out nature of all human experience has proven to be an effective way to overcome substituting addictions and chronic relapse.
New, non-traditional, non 12 step, holistic approaches to alcohol and drug treatment recognize the effective re-discovery of the innate health and core resilience that resides in each of us.

Beyond Addiction Episode-9 "Relapse and Substitution."
The opioid crisis began with overprescribing Hydrocodiene and Oxycontin, which resulted in many substituting with heroin, and from heroin to Fentanyl. Substitution can also occur with the substance of choice. Nationwide there's an increase in the use of methamphetamines by some formerly addicted to alcohol or narcotics. In Beyond Addiction Episode 9, we're going to talk about the subject of relapse and substitution. It's a critical topic and one that our intake counselor Alex Carle has a lot of insight to share with us.
