As the pandemic continues to make headlines, less attention is given to the rise in addiction-related drug deaths, and the need for more drug treatment.
The American Medical Association Advocacy Resource Center recently reported, “The AMA is greatly concerned by an increasing number of reports from national, state and local media suggesting increases in opioid- and other drug-related mortality—particularly from illicitly manufactured fentanyl and fentanyl analogs.”
Over 40 states reported increases in opioid-related deaths and noted concerns for those with co-occurring mental illness or substance use disorder.
Just as the pandemic is global, so are deaths due to substance use. In 2017 the World Health Organization estimated 115,000 deaths were attributed to opioid use. In 2018 almost 50,000 individuals in the United States died from opioid-related deaths. That is more than the number of deaths from firearms in the United States during that same time.
Those staggering numbers were recorded despite a small dip in overdose deaths that was noted in 2018. Total numbers increased again in 2019, proving that drug treatment availability is still desperately needed. Following a 4.6% increase in overdose deaths in 2019, preliminary federal data indicates that this year will go even higher with the compounded issues of a pandemic that has disrupted health care, increased isolation, and changed life for everyone. Early reports show drug overdose deaths up 11.4% in the first four months of 2020 compared with the same time last year.
Fatalities are the worst-case scenario for those with substance abuse issues.
The problems related to substance abuse expand exponentially beyond overdose, with mental and physical health issues, loss of relationships, employment, and financial concerns, to name just a few.
As the issues related to substance abuse soar, so does the need for quality drug and alcohol treatment programs.
