Despite improved emergency medicines like Naloxone, opioid overdose continues.
Opioid overdose deaths have declined slightly in the last few years, in part because of the availability of Naloxone. Commonly administered in emergency rooms or by first responders when an opioid overdose is suspected, Naloxone is a medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose by attaching to opioid receptors, reversing and blocking the effects of other opioids in the system.
Since it only works for 30 to 90 minutes, sometimes multiple doses of Naloxone are needed. Naloxone, however, does save lives as an immediate response to opioid overdose.
Despite improved methods of treating overdoses, in 2018, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 67,367 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States, and of those 46,802, or 70% of the total numbers involved opioids.
Even after an individual survives an opioid overdose, it doesn’t mean they are safe. In fact, a study published by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) on April 2, 2020 reports that about 1 in 20 patients, or 5% treated for a nonfatal opioid overdose in an emergency department, died within 1 year. Many of them died within 2 days of their emergency department visit. Two-thirds of the deaths were directly attributed to subsequent opioid-related overdoses.
Follow up treatment after overdose is critical for avoiding relapse, or death.
The study makes the logical suggestion that immediate treatment for substance use disorder in the emergency department, and treatment that continues following discharge from the emergency department is needed to further reduce opioid-related deaths. It recognizes that simply providing a list of detox facilities, which has been a common practice for decades, is not sufficient to decrease the numbers.
Many of those 1 in 20 patients would have a much better chance of living and for maintaining long term recovery if they immediately started an intensive substance abuse treatment program. A drug overdose signals a dangerous problem with addiction. All patients who present with a drug overdose should be treated for residential substance abuse.
