Understanding the Deadly Super Drugs of Abuse.

50 times more potent than heroin, 100 times more powerful than morphine, meet Fentanyl.

What is 50 times more potent than heroin?  What is 100 times more powerful than morphine?  Same answer to both questions, Fentanyl.  Fentanyl is a strong synthetic drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration to be medically used for pain relief and as an anesthetic.

Fentanyl escaped the medical arena and ended up on the streets as it was stolen, obtained by fraudulent prescriptions and distributed illegally.  It has now been joined by non-pharmaceutical fentanyl, or illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF).  Often mixed with heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine, IMF can be pressed into counterfeit pills, sometimes without the user’s knowledge.

Many celebrities have died from fentanyl overdoses or overdoses with fentanyl plus one or more other substances.  Both Tom Petty and Prince died from fentanyl overdoses.  Rapper Mac Miller overdosed on a combination of fentanyl, cocaine and alcohol.  In July 2018, Demi Lovato almost died after overdosing on oxycodone that had been laced with fentanyl.  In 2017 rapper Lil Peep died from a combination of fentanyl and Xanax, many say he did not know the Xanax was laced with fentanyl.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2017, more than 28,000 deaths involving synthetic opioids (other than methadone) occurred in the United States, which is more deaths than from any other type of opioid.

As recently as June 28, 2019, CBS news reported  that fentanyl “lollipops” had been illegally marketed by the pharmaceutical company that manufactured them.  According to the report, sales reps were encouraged to sell the product to doctors for purposes that the FDA had not approved, putting patients at risk for addiction and death.

An even more frightening drug has hit the streets, and unbelievably, it is 100 times as powerful as Fentanyl.  Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid that is used to tranquilize elephants and other large animals.

Drug dealers are mixing it with heroin to make the heroin stronger.  Again, users often don’t know that they are taking it.  A very tiny amount of carfentanil can quickly become fatal.

The drug is so powerful that it poses a threat both to first responders and law enforcement officers who may touch it by accident. The anti-overdose drug Narcan may not be effective with an overdose of carfentanil, even when multiple doses are administered.

According to another CBS news report, carfentanil is also being manufactured and shipped in the mail from China to the United States, which is now putting postal workers at risk.

Carfentanil is not intended for use by humans and is leaving a path of destruction in its wake.  The extreme potency of these substances makes them extremely dangerous.
