Mental Health Awareness Month a Different Perspective

mhawarnessmonthMay 2014 has been designated National Mental Health Awareness Month by the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The President also issued a proclamation at the beginning of the month, highlighting advancements in the recent efforts to get more help for people in need.

In November, HHS partnered with the Department of Labor and the Treasury to issue the final rule to implement the Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA). MHPAEA makes it easier for Americans to get the care they need by removing certain limits on insurance coverage for substance use and mental health treatment and services.

There are many symptoms of mental health problems, so much that national estimates are that about 1 in 5 adults will experience some form of mental illness during the year. That seems to be a lot of people with a lot of problems, but when the diagnostic criteria gets wider with more and more conditions, it is easy to see how so many people could get labeled.

The truth is we all have various difficulties in life and experience hardships at different points. There are many different ways to deal with these past troubles, including counseling and therapy, meditation, religious devotion, medications, exercise and activities, education, or a host of other things in various combinations.

One of the ways that we help people at Gulf Breeze Recovery deal with substance abuse and other mental issues is through the re-discivery of innate health. These concepts, when realized, help to free people from their past associations and allow them to freely move forward by releasing the bonds of negativity and self-doubt.

Recovery of physical and mental health is the main goal at our facility. In most cases the substance abuse is a symptom of an underlying issue that needs to be resolved. We do this with a different perspective since we are a non-12 step rehab facility and an alternative mental health program combined with other traditional therapies.
