Is forgiveness just a beautiful concept?
Forgiveness is such a beautiful concept, but some people or somedeeds certainly don’t deserve our forgiveness, do they?
Memories of past wrongs can create pain, even years after the painful event has passed. So if we are still suffering, then why would we even consider forgiving the person who caused the pain?
As counter-intuitive as it sounds, forgiveness is not to let the other person off the hook – it is to let us off the hook! The other person does not suffer every time we remember the past; they can’t know, and honestly, they may not care what we feel. The person may be thousands of miles from us now, or may even be dead.
We are the only one who is in pain with the memory, and we arethe only one who can get relief from forgiveness.
The Merriam-Webster online dictionary gives the simple definition of “forgive” as: to stop feeling anger toward (someone who has done something wrong): to stop blaming (someone). Notice the verbs used in the definition: feeling and blaming. Both of those are things we do that cause us personal discomfort, not the other person. By choosing not to forgive, we are punishing ourselves. Haven’t we suffered enough?
Notice that the definition doesn’t say that what the other person did was okay or that by forgiving we are saying that it was right; it identifies that it is “someone who has done something wrong.”
The definition says we stop feeling or stop blaming! We stop. And with stopping the feeling and blaming, we stop causing ourselves to suffer. Isn’t it about time?
Forgiveness equals freedom.
Freeing us from a past of pain. We stop allowing someone or something from the past to steal our present peace of mind.

Forgiveness is reclaiming our deserved peace now, and now is what matters. Perhaps forgiveness can be more than a beautiful concept; perhaps it is the key to freeing us from the memory of the person or deed and not allowing those who caused our harm to continue to play a role in our current lives.
