You can recover from addiction, and rediscover how it feels to dream!
Dreams for the future are a wonderful part of life. Kids are full of dreams concerning things they are going to do, what they are going to be or where they are going to go. Children dream of flying to the stars, becoming a doctor or a movie star, getting a pony or going to Disney World. Their dreams for the future are limitless.
Dreams continue as adults. We may dream about finishing our degree, starting our own business, finding the perfect mate, or owning a fancy, red convertible. Dreams motivate us to move toward those things we want in life, and the achievement of dreams is fantastic, which leaves us the opportunity to dream other, maybe even bigger, dreams!
Addiction murders dreams.
It kills the motivation to work toward the goal. Goals become a “buzz kill” and no longer seem within reach. Often with addiction, the dream is completely forgotten. Only the need to get the next fix seems important. Addiction is like an abusive lover filled with sweet promises but delivering only pain, need and desperation.
Addiction murders dreams.
Dreams that families have for seeing loved ones achieve their goals in life are shattered. Dreams of having the family unit intact and healthy die a slow death, as hope melts away. Hope is replaced with a sense of hopelessness and dread as families watch addiction destroy their dreams.
But all hope is not lost. Addiction doesn’t have to be forever.
Recovery can happen and does happen. With recovery, the resilience of human nature is seen, and dreams begin to reoccur. Recovery allows both the individuals and those who love them to dare to dream again. A future reappears that includes health, love, joy, dreams and plans that can be realized.
