Chances are likely that you’ve come across different websites and programs claiming certain success rates for their rehab centers. The truth is that very few of them, if any, accurately depict their actual results. One of the main obstacles is getting verifiable reports of sobriety, if that is what the statistic is based on.
Quantifying success in the addiction treatment and recovery fields has been a monumental task that, while examined from many angles, has yet to lay out a set criteria for defining and measuring what “success” really is. Factually, success starts with what both the individual and facility agree to or determine is a goal to achieve. For some this could be as simple as reducing the number of days of alcohol or drug consumption in a given period of time, reducing the number of days of usage or increasing the length of time in between heavy use episodes. There is even a large group that counts success as merely completing the program, and although retention rates should not be discounted, it seems there should at least be secondary goals after completion.
There are other less tangible measurements, such as identifying quality of life standards. Whether this means fewer trips to the hospital, more time with family or steady employment, it could be any number of criteria deemed important.
In 2007, the Betty Ford Institute established what it considered a workable definition of Recovery, which was “a voluntarily maintained lifestyle characterized by sobriety, personal health, and citizenship.” This was broken down into further detail and published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.
While the definition may not fit everyone’s standards, it was a consensus effort that at least attempted to standardize something in the field. Potentially the most important word in the definition is “voluntary,” as this indicates the participation of the individual in the treatment and recovery process. Without this activity becoming fully voluntary at some point along the way, there isn’t really a chance for any lasting success. Equally important is the notion that maybe the type of treatment isn’t quite as important as the intention of the person to remain in recovery.
