What is Neurofeedback Therapy?
Neurofeedback therapy is a process of monitoring the brain’s behavior by way of its electrical signals and using that information to reinforce positive brain behavior. This results in improved brain function and increased awareness of the role the brain’s chemical and electrical behavior plays in the decision making process.
Patients who have undergone neurofeedback sessions at Gulf Breeze Recovery have reported a wide range of positive outcomes; these include: decreased anxiety, increased attentiveness, improved sleep, greater awareness of mental behavior, and more.

How Does Neurofeedback Work?
The process of neurofeedback involves a series of sessions in which electrodes are attached to the scalp and brain function is monitored in real time. Essentially, calmer and less erratic brain activity is rewarded and brain activity associated with anxiety, rumination or fearful thinking is disincentivized in a noninvasive manner. This information is then shown back to the individual participating in the therapy along with visuals or audio signals. Working with a neurofeedback professional, the participant learns to develop the skills to regulate the performance of their brain.

Why Do We Use Neurofeedback at Gulf Breeze Recovery?
Neurofeedback has been shown to yield positive results in a growing body of peer reviewed literature. Consequently, our residents at Gulf Breeze Recovery benefit from the same proven benefits. Studies have shown that patients are better able to participate in and benefit from their experience and education after having received neurofeedback.
“Neurofeedback, in a nutshell, helps accelerate the focus process,” says Barnett Gilmer, founder and CEO of Gulf Breeze Recovery. “It helps a person get into what athletes commonly call ‘the zone.’ That’s when people are at their optimum.”
Barnett continues, “We want to provide our guests with everything possible to help them take control of, and succeed in, their recovery. Having seen the positive results in our guests and reviewed the growing body of literature in support of neurofeedback, we have made this therapy a permanent part of our program. The process of Neurotherapy further reinforces one of the principles at the core of our recovery philosophy: you are not your thoughts – you have the power to observe thought, understand the nature of thought and to choose your response to thought.”
